Huawei Overtakes the 8 Year Reign of APPLE as World’s 2nd Largest Smartphone Seller

Huawei finally surpasses Apple as the world's 2nd largest smartphone seller. The trillion USD worth company means nothing when you fall to the third.

Huawei, Chinese well-known smartphone, has surpassed Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone seller after Samsung.

In the second quarter of 2018, Huawei shipped around 54.2 million handsets, showcasing a 40.9% year-on-year growth and a 15% global market share, while Apple, the former no. 2, shipped about 41.3 million units, according to data from the U.S.-based International Data Corporation (IDC), while confirming the second position in the quarter by Counterpoint Research and IHS Markit.

The rising of Huawei is deemed significant as it is the first time since 2010 that the global top two smartphone vendors have not been Samsung and Apple. Currently, Samsung still remains the leader with a 20% market share for the June quarter.

Analysts said Huawei is gaining more brand recognition, especially in Europe and Asia as it has been adding top-end features into its flagship smartphones. The top notch P20 Pro device that boasts three rear-facing cameras, including one at 40 million pixel is the best seller.

Huawei’s prominence comes amid a global decline of smartphone demands. IDC figures said that there was a 1.8% annual decline of the smartphone market for the June quarter.
