Asia Stocks Plunge, Following a Negative Session in Wall Street amid Coronavirus Fear

Stocks in Asia fell in the morning session after a plummet in Wall Street last night amid coronavirus fear when the death toll rose to 100 in China.


Stocks in Asia fell in the morning session on January 28, 2020, after a plummet in Wall Street last night amid coronavirus fear when the death toll rose to 100 in China.

 

China mainland and Hang Seng stock markets were closed during the Chinese New Year, Nikkei dropped 0.90%, ASX 200 fell 1.36% and Kospi plunged 2.87%.

 

Over the night, Dow Jones fell 453.93 points, or 1.6% to 28,535.80 points, wiping out the average’s gains for the year. S&P 500 lost 1.6% while Nasdaq had its worst day since August with a drop of 1.9%.

 

The People’s Daily, a state-run newspaper, reported on Tuesday morning that the coronavirus has killed 106 people and infected nearly 4,200 in China. On the bright side, the media said that 58 people have recovered from the infection.

China has enforced travel restrictions while other countries including Thailand are screening people from China before entering Thailand.

Yesterday, General Prayut Chan-ocha said that the coronavirus in Thailand is in control and told his people not to panic.
