Japan to Declare Another State of Emergency on a Recent Spike in Covid-19 Cases

Japan would consider announcing the State of Emergency for the Greater Tokyo metropolitan area as coronavirus cases spike recently and the daily cases exceed 4,000 for the first time on New Year’s Eve.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Monday that the Government is considering declaring a state of emergency for the capital, Tokyo, and three neighbouring prefectures, following the request from the governors of Tokyo, where a resurgence of infections strained the country’s medical system.

The state of emergency over Covid-19 pandemic was firstly declared in Japan last spring and lasted more than a month.

Neither restrictions nor measurements for the possible emergency declaration have yet to be addressed, however, Japanese PM has resisted any such harsh steps to restrict economic activity.
