Morning brief of major stories since the closing of Thai stock market on 15 September 2021.


1) Thailand to attract rich expats for economic revival

The Thai government plans to attract more wealthy foreigners and skilled professionals to help boost the economy from the Covid-19 pandemic. The stimulus plan aims to include a special type of visa, ownership of properties and land and other exemptions.

 

2) Apple reveal iPhone 13 in the annual event

In the Apple event 2021, the company revealed the new iPad and iPad mini, Apple Watch Series 7, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The new iPads will go on sale right after the event on Tuesday and ship next week. The new iPhones go on sale on Friday, September 17 and ship on September 24. The Apple Watch Series 7 will ship later this fall.

 

3) U.S. inflation grows slightly slower-than-expected in August

The U.S. consumer price index in August increased 5.3% from a year earlier and 0.3% from July, which was lower than what economists had expected or 5.4% YoY and 0.4% MoM. Federal Reserves have been watching inflation growth closely this year, but saying that the acceleration will be temporary due to the Covid-19 factors.

 

4) Chinese retail sales and industrial production expected lower growth in August
Chinese economic data, including retail sales and industrial production for August, is scheduled to be released this morning. Economists expected retail sales to slow down from 8.5% in July to 7.5% in August. The industrial production data is also forecasted for smaller expansion at 6% in August, compared to 6.4% growth in July.
