Covid-19 Causes Foreign Tourist Arrivals to Thailand in March Declining by 76%


The Ministry of Tourism and Sports released the statistic of International Tourist Arrivals to Thailand in March 2020, showed that the number of foreign tourists collapsed by 76.41% compared to the same period of last year and the revenue from tourism plunged 77.58% YoY due to a covid-19 pandemic across the world. 

The outlook of first quarter tourism situation (Jan – Mar 2020), Thailand has a total of 6.7 million foreign visitors decreased 38.01% YoY.

In March, the total foreign visitors was recorded at 819,429, declined from 3,473,088 YoY. The figure of Chinese tourists had fell dramatically by 94.23% YoY, there were 985,232 Chinese visitors who came to Thailand in March 2019, but this year the number contracted to only 56,852 tourists. The very first coronavirus case were confirmed in the city of Wuhan, Hubei provincial, as an unprecedented disease, China has put about 15 cities on lock down since late January, the restriction measures estimated to affect on 50 million people and caused Chinese to stop traveling.

Besides the decline of Chinese travelers, the revenue from Chinese people has dropped by 95.8% YoY to record 2,098.42 million baht. 

The Indian tourists as well decreased 90.53% YoY. Meanwhile the second epicenter of virus outbreak, Europe region, the number of travelers plunged 51.20% YoY from 719,535 to 351,118. Several European nations have implemented a country’s lock down as a containment measures prevented more cases of covid-19, and some countries even applied a border controls.

While the American tourists declined by 77.97% YoY, leading to the loss of revenue up to 80.53% or 6,295.25 million baht. 

The statistic displayed that the number of foreign tourists has dropped sharply due to people around the world stopped traveling since the virus spreading and became clearly when entering February. 

According to latest report, there are more than 2,573,143 confirmed cases worldwide with 177,602 death. The U.S. still stands as the world’s largest number of covid-19 cases with over 825,306 cases, while Thailand has only 2,826 infections.
