Japan Elects “Yoshihide Suga” as New Prime Minister

Yoshihide Suga was elected by the parliament’s lower house on Wednesday as Japan’s new prime minister following the resignation of Shinzo Abe.

Suga, Chief Cabinet Secretary and Abe’s longtime right-hand man, pledged to pursue many of Abe’s programs and policies, including “Abenomics” economic strategy and he will continue about half of predecessor Shinzo Abe’s cabinet.

Abe, Japan’s longest-serving premier, announced his resignation last month due to ill health after being nearly eight years in office.
