BOT Expects Lockdown Measure to Impact Thai GDP in 2021 as Much as 2.0%

The Bank of Thailand estimated that the lockdown measures to curb Covid-19 infection could impact Thai GDP around 0.8%-2.0%.

Ms. Chayawadee Chai-Anant, Senior Director of Economic and Policy Department, Bank of Thailand, stated in the Media Briefing on July 22, 2021, that the resurgence of the Covid-19, which led to stringent measures to curb the outbreak, has impacted the economic activities and Thailand’s economy around 0.8-2.0%.

However, Ms. Chai-Anant noted that the estimate could not subtract directly from GDP estimation in 2021 as other factors such as the Ministry of Finance’s measures and exports contribute to Thai GDP.

In June, the Monetary Policy Committee estimated that the Thai economy in 2021 will expand 1.8%.
